Most people treat children with as much care as possible for the sake of their fragile immune system, and ability to harm themselves without trying. And now that the holiday season is upon us, with all it’s cold weather and rampant diseases, it’s important now more than ever to understand how well a child’s immune system can cope. Surprisingly, while scientists and child specialists have been harping on how important it is to keep your child bundled up, a new study shows that children may have better immune systems than us!
Dr. Robert Carson*, a renowned child researcher, is the man who lead the team to find out more about what a child’s immune system can handle. He is also well known for his book “Kids – Science’s Little Mysteries”, and his revolutionary product “kid gloves” which are hypoallergenic cotton gloves for people to wear when dealing with kids, so they don’t catch anything infectious.
“Children are a spectacular mystery.” says Dr. Carson*. “We know so little about them, but we literally make them from our own bodies. It’s incredible. When raising my own children, I was always doing everything I could to keep them safe and healthy. I would insist on them wearing jackets, and make sure they ate at regular times during the day. All the things that I thought children needed. Once we started this study on children and their immune systems, I found out that I was totally wrong!”
Dr. Carson* started by studying the way parents treat their children in our current society. To do this, his team went to a local store, where parents regularly shop with their children. One of the first things that they noticed was the lack of outerwear. “We always assumed that kids need a protective layer to prevent them from getting cold and eventually sick. But what we saw was that several parents didn’t seem to care that their children were cold at all! Some parents would even make fun of their children for not putting on a jacket, as if they should have known better. Eventually, we noticed more subtle changes in parenting styles like allowing their children to eat food they hadn’t purchased yet, usually junk food, that we assumed would compromise their immune system.” Says Dr. Carson*.
The team eventually moved to in-home study, which involved installing a camera and microphone in a few unsuspecting people’s homes and watching how they treat their children. What they saw, shocked them. Parents didn’t seem to care about their children’s immune systems at all! Parents let their children eat whenever they want, and whatever they want. Whereas most educated and caring parents would set specific times for their kids to eat, and ensure proper nutrition, these parents were allowing food to be consumed whenever the children pleased, leaving the children hungry at odd times, and sometimes missing meals entirely. Apparently, this doesn’t hurt children at all, though they did appear weak an malnourished…
Dr. Carson* says that they will be continuing their study on children with a greater emphasis on nutrition in the coming months. They have gotten permission to study students secretively in some local public schools. With any luck, they will be able to identify what causes children to actually become ill. They have also been promised support from a federal agency known as “DHS”, which they assume is some kind of ‘Diet & Health Service’.
